Kenya is set to benefit from a four-year interconnection of electricity grids in five Nile Equatorial Lakes countries.

The Standard reports the Sh152 million (US$2 million) project will be implemented by the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) and the Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Programme (NELSAP) in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The project is expected to create a power exchange market among Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi, and is set to lower the cost of electricity.

Antoine Sendama, NELSAP regional co-ordinator said the interconnection lowers the cost of power supply, ensures system stability and optimises the use of energy resources.
