Project: Tourist facilities

Location: Lake Victoria, Kisumu City

Summary: The project intends to establish a luxury passenger vessel - a 5-star floating hotel - on Lake Victoria. It will comprise of 40 double cabins to accommodate 80 passengers. The proposed floating hotel will provide additional accommodation facilities in the region, which is lacking adequate tourist facilities. Luxury passenger boats can also be operated between Kisumu and Muhuru bay with stopovers at Kendu Bay, Mfungano Island and Rusinga Island and are all situated along the lake shores. Potential investors can extend the cruiseship circuit to include Uganda and Tanzania.

Sector: Despite a surge in global cruise tourism in 2011, the sub-sector in East Africa suffered due to insecurity, which saw kenya receive only two calls by international cruise liners. Consequently, measures are being taken to intensify security, and the Kenyan government is particularly keen to market Mombasa as a cruise tourism destination. The Kenya Ports Authority plans to expand two berths at the Mombasa port to accommodate cruise ships. The berths have the potential to handle conventional cargo and cruise ships but lack adequate facilities for tourists. This has compromised the quality of services that tourists would get compared to other popular destinations such as South Africa.  Lake Victoria, the largest fresh water lake in Africa, holds great potential for Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Apart from cruise ships, water sports and floatels, potential for investment exists on beaches along the lake shores, which are ideal for hotels and clubs. Opportunities for lodges, tented camps and land sports also exist further away from the lake shores. For all these to be developed, there is need to provide adequate supportive infrastructure, which is also an business opportunity in itself.
