


Kenya has plenty of geothermal springs whose mineral contents have the potential for the development of health spas to serve as curative centres as well as tourist attractions.
Project name: Developing health spas
The project aims at utilizing the abundant geothermal springs for the development of quality health spas. Geothermal mineral water springs are found in the Rift Valley province and parts of Western province.
Project site
The most significant hot water springs are found in the following places:
• Around Lakes Bogoria and Baringo. The two lakes are 345 Km from Nairobi and are within National Game Parks.
• Around Lake Turkana which sits at the borders of Kenya, Ethiopia and Sudan.
• Olkaria and Eburu near Lake Nakuru which is famous for flamingos.
• Simbi on the shores of Lake Victoria. The area is close to Maasai Mara Game Reserve renowned for its wildlife.
Benefit to promoter: Development of the spas will stimulate economic growth in the regions. Natural and cultural attractions here can also be developed to benefit the local people.
Completed work: A pre-feasibility study has revealted that the geothermal waters are excellent for the development of health spas of international standards.
There is however a need to conduct further studies to establish the viability and investment levels of this opportunity.
Market: It is expected that the clients will be both local and foreign visiting the locations for other attractions such as yachting, game watching and cultural experiences.
Incentives: The government will provide the entire necessary infrastructure for this development. Investors can also take advantage of other attractive incentives.
