Kenya presents significant investment opportunities in solid waste management, especially in Nairobi and other major cities like Mombasa and Kisumu.

Investment Opportunity

Nairobi produces an average of 2400 metric tonnes of sold waste per day. Management of this waste through recycling will reduce environmental pollution and offer employment opportunities through commercial ventures.

Investors are welcome to invest in solid waste management. Recycling of waste can be undertaken through public private partnerships and may be extended to other cities and towns in the country.

Specific areas of investment include:

  • Waste disaggregation
  • Sanitary landfills
  • Recycling
  • Sewerage systems maintenance
  • Establishment and maintenance of public parks along the banks of the Nairobi and Ngong rivers
  • Sector: Solid wastes in Nairobi City are a by-product of a broad spectrum of industrial, service and manufacturing processes. Primary high-volume generators of industrial solid wastes include the chemical, petroleum, metals, wood, paper, leather, textile and transportation industries. Secondary smaller generators include auto and equipment repair shops, electroplaters, construction firms, dry cleaners and pesticide applicators. The 32-acre dump site in Dandora serves as the city's main refuse disposal site. But the area's residents want it moved elsewhere. Waste management is a challenge across the country's cities and towns, as councils continue to rely on inadequate internal capacities to manage waste. The City Council of Nairobi is in the process of privatising the management of the industry and has proposed generation of electricity from solid waste. This could provide a new source of energy for the city's expanding manufacturing sector, and the growing urban population.
